Hatfield Main Colliery officially closes

25th August 2015

The closure of Hatfield Main Colliery was officially recognised on Friday, 14th August with a ceremony to donate the last lump of coal mined at the pit to Doncaster Council.

John Grogan, chairman of the Hatfield Employee Benefit Trust presented the coal to the Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones. He said, "We could have just walked away but we thought it was worth gathering for our last days as an independent company to recognise the contribution that miners have made for a century in Doncaster and South Yorkshire." Ros Jones, on receiving the symbolic piece of coal, said she was, "humbled" to accept it, her father having started out in the pit as a young boy. She said the closure of the pit had been a "massively" sad time for the area, and said the next step was to assist people with getting training and jobs.

With reference to the campaign to save the headgear, the Mayor said Doncaster Council had assisted the heritage association with where to go with their bid and where they could obtain grants.
